honest opinion on my composition?
hey would people be able to listen too my composition at http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/index.php?sm=home.score&scoreID=154773
im 15 and composed this for use in a concert (and for gcse where it got full marks A*) which sounded much better than the sibelius recording. if possible could you leave reviews on the website and its free to print , i would be even more grateful if someone used the music in a ensemble and let me knew how it went!
in general im looking for reviews and honest opinions, if someone reviews on the site they will receive the points.
NN yeh i play piano and trumpet
i will look into that book
as for knowing about the instruments, i conduct my school orchestra so know quite abit about violins but not as much as i would like
yeh the low registers are not great looking back but my teacher wanted contrasting phrases , it could be one thing im going to change.
I’m not an expert on these things but it’s exciting to see someone who’s pursuing music composition. Do you play any instruments? It’d be nice for you to learn what they could be done technically on the instruments that you are writing for. You don’t have to become a virtuoso though.
I didn’t analyze the piece in details, but let’s see:
Catchy melody in the beginning… lots of parallel fourths and parallel thirds… from measure 13 to m. 20 (I’d say it’s too many parallel motions from all three parts)
The use of a four-measure phrase isn’t a good attention catcher at all, it doesn’t leave you wanting for more. Violins don’t sound their best in low register, so try showing off their strengths. It doesn’t make sense when you ask a soprano to sing most of the notes in her lower and middle register (D4-D6).
Have you ever read “Study of Counterpoint: From Johann Joseph Fux’s Gradus Ad Parnassum”? I highly recommend this since it’s short and easy to read. Above all, I’m excited for you. Keep writing and listening to great performances and great pieces!!!
